Although not an official tour, we packed up the truck last Friday and headed to Playa Popoyo and Gigante Bay, a small fishing and surfing village of about 300 locals and a handful of expats offering sailing and snorkeling tours.
Popoyo beach is famous for its waves and so we went there to meet friends for lunch, have a few drinks and take a few shots. Given the relatively short distance to San Juan (a bit more than an hour), it seemed like a perfect way to spend the afternoon. And it was.

After missing our friends at the Rancho Santana we figured it out by phone and met in Popoto at Restaurante El Toro, a beach front place that served up the best Mexican food I have ever had in Nicaragua. A Californian, I was in heaven. Then it was time to take some casual shots (both kind)..
Although developed over the years -- hostels, restaurants and bars -- the area offers much in the way of outdoor activities, including, kayaking, sailing, hiking, monkey watching and, for photographers, amazing views and sunsets.

What I love about this area is that it just lends itself to your camera or smartphone, which is all I was carrying that day.
Still, It is pretty hard to take a bad photo here. I was excited since our new smartphone tutorial is about to be released.
Let us know if you are interested in tagging along sometime at a discounted rate.
